love paint — 3D science models kids print, paint, label and learn

love paint is a weekly paint-and-learn kit for kids aged 7 to 13: a 3D-printed science model that the child paints with markers, labels with numbered flags and finishes with a short quiz. The first kit is a plant cell with 17 parts, and the whole product — from the model to the web shop — lives on one site.

How it started

The first prototype was made at the kitchen table: the plant cell model was designed with the help of AI, printed in white on our own 3D printer and painted with acrylic markers. When the colours brought every part of the cell to life, learning turned into play, so the decision was easy: a new kit every week. My part of the job is turning an idea like that into a product that works: the model, the learning content, the website, payments and delivery.

How it works — four steps

  1. Print — 3D print at home, or order a ready-printed model
  2. Paint — follow the colours for each numbered part
  3. Label — flags with part names go into the matching numbered holes
  4. Learn — a short quiz and fun facts on the kit page

What's in one kit

The kit page is not just a product description but a whole lesson in one place:

  • 3D preview in the browser — rotate and zoom the model before you buy
  • Pad map and parts table — 17 parts, their colour and what each one does (nucleus, chloroplast, mitochondrion, vacuole…)
  • Print settings — white PLA, 0.16–0.20 mm layers, 15–20% infill, no supports, about 156 × 204 mm
  • Painting steps, flag sheet, quiz and fun facts — a guide from the first stroke to the knowledge check

Web shop: from an STL file to a full kit

Buyers choose between a digital file and a physical kit, and pay with PayPal or a card:

  • STL file — €4.50, instant download
  • Month of four STL files — €11.50, for those who own a printer
  • Printed model — €17.00 + shipping, white model with numbered pads
  • Full kit — €32.00 + shipping: model, markers, flags and guide, ages 7+

Buying on the kit page: four options, PayPal or card.

Physical kits ship across the EU, with 14 days to return an unused kit. For the digital file, the buyer explicitly confirms before downloading that there is no cancellation once the download starts. The STL licence covers personal use, and a classroom licence is also available.

The engineering and AI behind the product

AI is a tool here, not a slogan: it helped design the first model, and the kit catalogue is also published in machine-readable form — a public JSON feed, OpenAPI and a public MCP endpoint — so AI assistants can answer accurately what a kit contains and which ages it suits. Analytics only switch on once a visitor accepts the cookie, and there are no ads.

What this project shows

  • From idea to product: an AI-assisted model, 3D printing, learning content and a web shop in one flow
  • Digital and physical sales together: downloads, EU shipping, licences and cancellation rules
  • Content built as data: the same kit feeds the web page, the printable sheet and a public catalogue for AI assistants
  • The same approach as my production systems: a clear path from intent to a working system
